Assistance for Students on Classes

Dear University of Oregon Students,

As we are all settling into fall term, we wanted to connect with you and ensure that you understand the difference between web and remote classes, to identity some ways to set yourself up for success, and to direct you to some of the resources that are here to support you along the way. Teaching and learning during this challenging time is requiring all of us to adapt, but you’re not alone and we can make the most of this together.

Web vs. Remote Classes

  • Classes marked as WEB are purposefully designed to be delivered completely online with no mandatory live engagement.
  • Classes marked as REMOTE are supposed to have live engagement during scheduled class periods.

It is important to make sure you’re checking your Concise class schedule to see a full list of your courses with their dates, time, and WEB or REMOTE designations. (Find these by going to Duckweb > Student Menu > Student Class Schedule > Concise Format). Note that WEB courses do not have a specific meeting pattern and will not appear on the Matrix Format of your schedule.

Each course will be structured differently, so pay close attention to your course Canvas site to make sure you understand the expectations and deadlines for your classes. You are always encouraged to ask questions of your instructors, so they can explain how the class is taught if you aren’t sure.

Set Yourself up for Success

Since we’re mostly remote this fall, it is even more important for you to keep track of your assignments, exams, and deadlines this term. If you haven’t already, review your course syllabi carefully, mapping out assignments and due dates for the term. Also, familiarize yourself with your Canvas site as well, so you know where to find what you need.

It is also critical that you regularly check your UO email. This is the official method of communication for the entire university, and you want to make sure you don’t miss any important information. Click here for tips on how to connect your email account to a mobile device.

Access Support

There are a lot of resources and people to help you along the way.

Advisors are available to help answer questions, get you connected to resources, and navigate your classes. There are multiple ways to connect with an advisor this term. You can find a full list of campus advising centers and how to connect with them here.

If you need help with IT or Canvas support, academic policies, tutoring resources, or anything else, start here. It’s where you can find a wide range of resources to support your online or remote coursework.

If you have significant concerns about the expectations or communication you’re receiving for a course:

  • Reach out directly to the instructor about your concerns
  • If you can’t reach them or your concern remains unresolved, send an email to courseconcern@uoregon.edu
  • UO Health Services’ Counseling Services offers great support options, including its “Let’s Talk” program that provides easy access to free, one-on-one consultations with a staff member.

Despite the pandemic, the University of Oregon is here to help you in any way we can. Let us know if you have any questions by sending an email to uoadvising@uoregon.edu.

Sincerely,

Doneka R. Scott, Vice Provost
Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success
