AWARD DETAILS
The Rangel Program is a collaborative effort between Howard University and the U.S. State Department and welcomes applications from individuals who want to make a difference in the world through as Foreign Service Officers in the U.S. Department of State. The Rangel Program will select 30 outstanding Rangel Fellows annually in a highly competitive nationwide process and helps support them through two years of graduate study, internships and professional development activities, and entry into the Foreign Service. Rangel Fellows are committed to serving their country and promoting positive change globally.
This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be a U.S. citizen
- Open to all academic fields
- GPA of 3.2 or higher
- Graduating senior or alumni seeking admission to a two-year graduate program at a U.S. university in an area of relevance to the Foreign Service.
Award Highlights:
- Fellowship for graduate studies (up to $34,000 annually toward tuition, room, board, books, and mandatory fees for a completion of two-year master’s degrees)
- Orientation
- Two summer internships (Capitol Hill and overseas at U.S. Embassies)
- Mentoring
- Fellows who successfully complete the Rangel Program and Foreign Service entry requirements will receive appointments as Foreign Service Officers in the U.S. Department of State
Application Components:
- Biographical information
- Personal statement (600 words maximum)
- Brief essay (350 words or less) with example of relevant planning or organizing skills
- Statement of financial need (400 words maximum)
- Letter of recommendation (2)
- One from a faculty member who is well acquainted with the individual
- One from a community leader or other individual who can comment on the applicant’s college, volunteer, work or community activities
- Proof of citizenship (PDF format)
- Passport, birth certificate or certificate of citizenship
- Student aid report (SAR), generated from FAFSA
- Official financial aid statement from senior year (if student received financial aid)
- Transcript (s)
- GRE or GMAT scores (optional)
