AWARD DETAILS

The Mitchell Scholars Program, named to honor former US Senator George Mitchell’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to public service and community. Up to 12 Mitchell scholars who may be seniors, alumni, no older than 30, are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Award covers tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and international travel.

Eligibility 

• Institutional endorsement required - undergraduate applicants are not able to apply directly
  • Individuals applying, who have already graduated from UO, are not required to go through the university endorsement process and may apply directly
• Applicants must be a U.S. citizen
• Open to all academic fields
• Graduating senior or alumni (not yet 30 by the application deadline)

Award Highlights: 

• Tuition, accommodation, and a stipend for living expenses and travel for one academic year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland
  • No allowance is made for the expenses of a scholar’s spouse, partner, or dependents

• Letter of recommendation (4)
  • two of the letters of reference must come from persons with whom the candidate has done academic work
•  Institutional endorsement (for undergraduate students only)
•  Personal statement
  • In 1,000 words or less, share your personality, passion, and drive with the selection committee.  Describe your academic and other interests.  Describe the specific area of proposed study and your reasons for selecting a particular institution
• Short video interview (after application has been received)
• PDF of passport-sized photo
• PDF of the applicant's signature. Sign a blank paper. Scan it. Upload that file
• Propose academic program essay (s)
  • The applicant is responsible for researching and listing at least three specific proposed graduate programs at three different universities in Ireland. See Institutions in Ireland
• Transcript (s)
  • PDF containing unofficial copies of [all] an applicant's college (and graduate, when applicable) transcript[s] must be uploaded in PDF format. If a Social Security Number (SSN) is shown on transcript(s), please obscure that information. The system will accept ONE PDF file in this field for each application.
