Academic Residential Community (ARC) Seminars
ARC students co-enroll in two- to three-term ARC seminars satisfying core education and/or major, minor, and pre-professional requirements that engage students in an experiential, project-based, research-oriented pedagogy culminating with presentations at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. Students completing four credits in UGST 111 (Arts & Letters), UGST 112 (Social Science), or UGST 113 (Science) over the course of their first year earn one course toward the corresponding Core Education Group Area requirement.
First-Year Interest Group (FIG) and Transfer Transition Seminars
First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs) and Transfer Transition Seminars are cohorts of approximately 20 first-year or transfer students who choose to engage in a unique, integrated academic experience. Each cohort enrolls in a package of one to three coordinated courses. A typical FIG includes two larger core-education courses paired with a First-Year Experience (FYE) Seminar taught by a faculty instructor and supported by an undergraduate peer mentor (FA).
Within the seminar, students’ educations are enriched through experiential learning and hands-on activities that are intentionally linked to the lecture courses through an interdisciplinary approach. In addition, students are introduced to key university resources and support services designed to promote academic success and sustained engagement throughout their time at the University of Oregon.
